FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The HCODX YouTube Thumbnail Downloader is 100% free, ad-free, and does not require signup, login or an API key. There are no daily limits.

YouTube's largest thumbnail is Max-Res Default at 1280×720 (often called HD or 4K thumbnail). Some older or low-view videos don't have a Max-Res file — in that case the highest available is the Standard Definition (640×480) or High Quality (480×360) version.

Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts/ URL and the tool extracts the video ID and grabs every available thumbnail just like a regular video. Shorts are usually portrait, but the thumbnails are stored in YouTube's standard 16:9 frames.

YouTube serves the same thumbnail at the /vi/ path as JPG and at /vi_webp/ as WebP. WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller at the same visual quality. Use the format toggle to switch.

Max-Res Default (1280×720) is only generated for videos uploaded in HD or higher. Older uploads, low-resolution sources and some Shorts only have lower-resolution sizes. The tool marks unavailable sizes so you know which exist.

Thumbnails are copyrighted by the video uploader. Downloading them is fine for personal use, reaction videos under fair use, or with the uploader's permission. Check copyright before commercial reuse.

No. URL parsing and thumbnail rendering happen entirely in your browser. The tool just builds img.youtube.com URLs from the video ID — fetched directly by your browser from YouTube's CDN.

https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/SIZE.jpg where SIZE is maxresdefault, sddefault, hqdefault, mqdefault, default, or one of 0, 1, 2, 3 for frame stills. Replace /vi/ with /vi_webp/ and .jpg with .webp for the WebP version.
